Family Birth Services believes water birth to be a safe and effective means of having your baby. Labor is hard work and can get pretty intense, hence the term ‘labor’. Water births can make a huge difference in many women’s labor by helping the body to relax. When your body is in heavy labor or transition, the warm water in a birthing pool or tub provides a wonderful way to relax and helps women cope with labor with a calming effect. Water birth is the process of giving birth in a tub of warm water. Since the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, some women decide they would like to birth in a similar environment for a gentler experience for the baby.
Water birth provides many benefits for the mother as well, such as:
- increasing the woman’s energy,
- lessening a mother’s body weight, allowing free movement and new positioning,
- lowering high blood pressure in some cases,
- reducing stress-related hormones, allowing the body to produce endorphins,
- and providing relaxation both physically and mentally.
Every pregnancy is different, and there are times where it is not recommended to labor or give birth in water.
Family Birth Services has wonderful birthing tubs available to rent for those desiring a water birth at home. Whether you just labor in the water for a little while or choose to give birth in there, the water can be a great tool to help you have the birth you set out to have.
